WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE FOR 16TH – 22ND FEBRUARY

Headline Of The Week

As a means to get more developers to adopt the Unreal Engine 4, Epic Games are set to give away nearly $5 million via a grant initiative. Epic will help to fund projects that it likes the look of, with the intention that the developer will retain all rights to the IP and publishing while the engine gets exposure – projects that have been crowdfunded will also be eligible for a grant of between $5,000 and $50,000. The co-founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, has explained why the company has put forward the idea:

“While development can be fueled by creativity and determination alone, finishing and releasing a commercial project often requires money…A small budget can make all the difference in shipping a project with the content, marketing materials, and promotional expenses necessary for it to gain traction. We like games, of course, but we also want to see animated features, architectural visualizations, Marketplace content, mods- anything that will make us say ‘Whoa.’”

Epic have already won plaudits for how accessible it has made the Unreal Engine 4; it is open to all for $19 a month with devs having to pay a 5% of gross revenue royalty fee once the game is finished.
