WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE FOR 20TH – 26TH OCTOBER

Headline Of The Week

Dark Souls II walked away with the prestigious title of ‘Game Of The Year’ at the Golden Joystick Awards on Friday, as the ceremony entered its 32nd year.

As the second longest running gaming award ceremony in the world and one of few that allows gamer’s to vote for the winners, any success naturally demands some attention and FromSoftware’s RPG sequel follows a long line of winners that most recently has included Grand Theft Auto V, Skyrim, Portal 2 and Mass Effect 2.

The other big winners from the ceremony held at the O2 Arena included DayZ, Hearthstone and Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag, which each won two awards apiece. Ubisoft Montreal was (perhaps controversially) awarded Studio Of The Year, Oculus Rift was named Innovation Of The Year for the second time in a row, and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima was given a much deserved Lifetime Achievement Award. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt was once again hailed as the one to watch for the future with a new cinematic trailer, and the ‘love him or despise him’ YouTuber PewDiePie was named ‘Gaming Personality’. WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE FOR 1ST – 7TH SEPTEMBER

Headline Of The Week

Persona 5, Atlus’ much anticipated RPG sequel, will be coming to PS4 – a decision which has immediately vindicated my decision to buy the console. The news was revealed in a new teaser trailer which featured in Sony’s pre-Toyko Games Show press conference, which also suggests that the game has slipped to a 2015 worldwide release date (it was originally intended that the PS3 version would arrive in Japan by the end of this year). On the flipside of this news however, 3DS title Shin Megami Tensei IV has been delayed in Europe until late October – pushing it further than a year since its original release.

A selection of 44 titles were shown off with several new games also revealed, including Resident Evil Revelations 2, a brand new Everybody’s Golf and the gorgeous looking Dragon Quest Heroes (which will get a special ‘Metal Slime’ edition of the PS4), as well as confirmation that dynamic menu themes will be included in System Software update 2.00. TGS 2014 kicks off in earnest on September 18th.

WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE FOR 31ST MARCH – 6TH APRIL

Headline Of The Week

Online retailer Amazon has unveiled the Fire TV; a tiny set top box which will feature the ability to stream films, television and, most importantly for the sake of this article, games as well.

Priced at $99, the box runs on Android and offers 2GB of memory, a quad core processor and built in Wi-Fi (a $40 controller is sold separately). Executives at Amazon have hinted that it may be up to three times as powerful as rival devices such as Google’s Chromecast or Roku. The downside at the moment is that Amazon has yet to reveal any plans for release outside of the United States.

Several big name developers have pledged their support to the system, including TellTale Games who have confirmed that both The Walking Dead & The Wolf Among Us will be playable on the Fire TV. In total 95 games have thus been confirmed, ranging from free-to-play up to $10.

A separate announcement was also made that Metacritic scores for games will now appear on Amazon’s video game listings, offering users the chance to weigh up relatively pointless (and often times, paid for) opinions on products without having to leave the site.
