Capcom Go Crazy, A Handheld SNES, First FIFA 12 Details And Deals Galore On Xbox Live

Over the last few days, the internet has been pummelled with some excellent news on all sorts of stuff within the gaming industry. In the post I hope to give as good an overview of every possible that has caught my eye.

First of all then, Capcom. I really quite like them; there is little doubt of the quality of their franchises over the years (Resident Evil, Mega Man, Street Fighter etc.). This week they announced to the media the progress of several of their titles, including more details on the eagerly anticipated Street Fighter X Tekken (a crossover game based to be made by Capcom, whereas Namco will make Tekken X Street Fighter). Now this was announced almost a year ago, and it looked absolutely epic. Now, Capcom have given details on the roster to date (10 characters confirmed, including Ryu, Ken, Chun Li and Guile from Street Fighter, and Kazuya, Nina, Bob and King from Tekken), and included some trailers and gameplay videos, which frankly look absolutely gorgeous with the stylised visuals we have gotten used to with Street Fighter. I preferred Street Fighter 4 to Tekken 6, and I personally think that Capcom’s effort will crush Namco’s interpretation of the game when it comes to sales.

Guile's theme goes with King apparently

And speaking of interpretations, that leads me nicely into Capcom’s second announced project: Dead Rising 2: Off The Record. Basically, the idea of the game is what would have happened in Fortune City if Frank West (the hero of the original Dead Rising) had been there instead of Chuck? Judging from what they’ve released of it, he’d get in a ring and suplex some zombies. And take lots of pictures. In essence, forget that Dead Rising 2 ever happened, this is the story retold with a new system of gameplay including better saving and new missions and combos. To be honest, the premise sounds really interesting, and if anyone can pull off a game that involves wrestling Zombies, then it would be Capcom. However, I do get the feeling that some fans of Dead Rising 2 will see this as a lazy cash in. Time will tell whether this is a shrewd move on Capcom’s behalf.

Moving on, over the last few days we have had the first glimpses of what FIFA 12 is going to entail. David Rutter has promised ‘a revolution in gameplay’, and we have been treated to our first image of the game, which involves Kaka kicking a ball. The hype can begin in earnest then before its release in September/October, and I really do hope that Rutter can finally deliver on his word. There is no doubt that the franchise has been steadily improved on the 7th generation consoles, and FIFA 12 should ensure that it stays at the top of the football genre for another year. Just make clubs less laggy and punish quitters more, and I’m in. More details are expected on May 9th.

Confirmed: Kaka, grass, footballs and a blurry crowd

So that’s game announcements out of the way: how about a NEW CONSOLE??? Yep, a third party producer in America called Hyperkin has announced their new console, the SupaBoy, which plays original SNES cartridges on the move. It can also hook up to a big screen using an AV cable, and two original SNES controllers can be plugged in the front for extra convenience. It has only been announced for the USA at the moment, with no details on a European release. I must admit I am a sucker for stuff like this; many SNES games have already been remade for handheld use on the Game Boy and the DS, but the appeal of walking around with the original cartridges playing in your hand is just too good. Perhaps Nintendo should have made this before the 3DS…
